1) Saving Paper - Conserving valuable classroom supplies is important for every teacher. When we designed ExamView, we made every effort to provide ways for you to save paper when printing tests. Here are a few tips to save paper ($$) on your next test. Saving even one page can make a big difference in your copying costs.

Option 1: After you build a test, choose the Test Layout command and select the "no columns" option for multiple choice questions. To make the choices stand out, choose the Preferences command, select the Style tab, and set the choice style to bold. As you can see from the simple example below, you can save a lot a space for each question.

Before using this option, a question might look like…
ExamView can support the following question types:
a. true/false
b. multiple choice
c. essay
d. all of these

After using the conserve option…
ExamView can support the following question types: a. true/false b. multiple choice c. essay d. all of these

Option 2: Many publishers use a two-column format for multiple choice questions. If they do not, you can save paper by changing the number of columns. Sometimes this option is preferable to the "no columns" option.

Build a test and then press Ctrl + M (use the command key for the Macintosh). Select the number of columns and click the OK button. You can automatically change all questions from one column to two columns.

Option 3: You can use the Replace Font command to decrease the font size, but be careful not to make it too small.

Option 4: Use the Copy Test command to copy a test and then paste it into a word processor. Then, you have an almost unlimited array of options to reduce the number of pages a test requires (e.g., change the margin, edit line spacing, etc.)

2) Using Narratives - Do you ever create questions that refer to the same graph, illustration, or table? Placing such information in each question can be time consuming. And, making changes results in more work. In these instances, use the Narratives option. With this feature, you can enter that graph, illustration, or table once and then link questions to the narrative.

The program will automatically display/print the narrative if you include any question that refers to it. If you have to edit a narrative, you make the change only once. Another advantage is that since a narrative prints only once per test, you will save paper too.

For step-by-step instructions on how to use narratives, check out that topic in the help system included as part of the program.
