As a new user of ExamView, I have not had the time to fully explore all of its many features. However, in the short time I have used ExamView, I have already found two features that are especially effective for my math classes--publishing a study guide on the Internet and publishing a multiple choice test either on the Internet or on our local area network.

In years past, I created study guides and solutions handouts prior to each test and then photocopied them for every member of my classes. Now, using ExamView, I type and store study guide questions and solutions in a test bank. Math symbols can be inserted using the built in equation editor, similar to Math Type. As questions accumulate throughout the year, I am easily able to create study guides that include not only new material but old material as well. I can quickly edit questions from earlier in the year so they are not exactly the same questions but still help the student to revisit old concepts. I publish the study guide to the Internet through ExamView's website. The students then access the study guide at home and can work on it with immediate feedback for their answers. Parents especially appreciate the ease with which these online study guides help them participate in their child's education.

Whenever I give a quiz or test that is all multiple choice, I publish it to the Internet and then take my class to the computer lab to take the quiz or test. The students appreciate the fact that the test is immediately graded and they have instant access to their results, and I appreciate the fact that ExamView does all the grading for me! All of the scores can be automatically e-mailed to me, and I can view a complete listing of the scores and statistics of the class in aggregate through ExamView's website.

In addition to the instant results for students and automatic grading for me, another advantage of publishing tests and study guides to the Internet is that students who are absent have access to what they missed in class. Although there is a certain level of trust that must be given to the student, I can scramble the answers and check to see how long it took the student to actually take the test. I can also use ExamView to set a time limit for the test to help reduce the chance of the student getting outside help while taking the test.

Another of the great features of ExamView is the ability to give the student immediate feedback when using an Online study guide. Using the Notes field, you can actually input unique responses for the incorrect choices in a through d to be used as feedback in multiple choice questions. In place of simply the word "Incorrect," these responses will pop up on the screen when the student enters a response and chooses to check his or her answer. You can provide hints for the student based on the answer they choose. The student can use this hint when trying to answer the question a second time.

To use the Notes field, choose the question and then click the Info button. Your screen will look similar to the screen shown below. The format for unique responses in the Notes field is: /a/response for choice a. /b/ response for choice b. /c/response for choice c. /d/response for choice d.

After creating the study guide, click the Online menu and select the Online Test Wizard. Follow the steps displayed on your screen, and be sure to check the box labeled Display question "NOTES" for incorrect responses in Step 5. You will then save the test.

Pictured below, you can see that the student receives feedback that is specific to the answer he or she selected.

The Notes field can be used with any question type. You may also use notes in tests other than LAN-based tests. The notes will appear at the end of these tests with the answer.

It takes a little extra time to create a test bank with notes for each answer, but the rewards are well worth the time spent. Next year I will have a large bank of questions that I can draw upon and easily edit if necessary. During the summer months there will be time to explore the other features of ExamView and make plans to incorporate them into my curriculum as well.
